Murder charge appearance
NZPA London A New Zealand woman’s boyfriend appeared in court in London yesterday accused of her murder. lan Steele, aged 29, of Sydney, was charged in the Marlborough Street Magistrate’s Court in central London with the murder of Carol Lee Messenbird, aged 26, of Tauranga, on or about October 26 last year. Steele was remanded in custody for a week after a brief hearing during which he remained silent Ms Messenbird’s decomposed body was found beside the main BedfordLondon railway line at Ampthill, Bedfordshire, at the week-end.
It is believed that she was murdered in London and her body was dumped at the spot, where it remained for at least six months until its discovery. Ms Messenbird met Steele while in Britain on a two-year working holiday, apparently unaware that he was on the run after escaping from a Sydney jail in 1986. Steele was arrested and appeared in court in London last week after an alleged armed hold-up of a London building society. On Monday he returned to court to face 35 new counts, mainly of armed robberies of banks and building societies throughout Britain.
