Drivers condemn fee rise
PA Wellington Commercial transporters have condemned sharp increases in mobile radio licence fees that followed structural changes in Telecom this month. Telecom’s radio telephone division was split from the parent corporation and set up as a subsidiary, Telecom Mobile Radio, Ltd, from April 1. Heavy transport companies and taxi co-opera-tives have since been hit by radio licence fee increases of up to 300 per cent. The secretary of the Taxi Proprietors’ Federation, Mr George Tyler, said some co-operatives would pay twice as much under the new structure. Fee increases averaged 73 per cent. The managing director of Telecom Mobile Radio, Mr Bruch Ash, said yesterday the change had resulted in direct cost recovery for the service, rather than basic increases.
