Ashburton date not available

The Ashburton County Racing Club will not seek a replacement date for its abandoned meeting of March 20. A sub-committee, formed after a unanimous vote from the club executive to find a suitable date, if possible, has found none is practicable. The club had been looking at April 18 as a possibility but coming the day after the second day of the Nelson meeting, and given the practicalities of organising and promoting the meeting, the date was not considered feasible. “Even though there is a gap in racing in Canterbury in this period it is very hard to find a suitable day. And once we go into May we are into the winter season as far as jumping races are concerned which is another complication,” said the club secretary, Trevor Robertson. “We must expect other clubs to be much the same as us. They don’t like their day being suddenly shared with another club.” There was also the economics of another permit to be considered. Few clubs which have sought to restore a lost permit have met with financial success.
