U.K. price fixing alleged

PA London The New Zealand Animal By-Products Exporters’ Association has accused British leather group Strong and Fisher of trying to fix the price of New Zealand lamb pelts, and is threatening to take legal action, according to a media report. The "Sunday Telegraph” said that the association is understood to have made the threat in a letter which alleges Strong and Fisher has written to a number of Korean tanners “in an attempt to influence the price of lamb pelts from New Zealand.”

According to the association, Strong and Fisher has written to Korena lamb tanners claiming that European and American buyers planned to boycott the New Zealand market until pelt prices came down. It is claimed that the Korean tanners were urged to take similar action. This latest development comes just as the Monopolies and Mergers Commission report is expected on Strong and Fisher’s bid for rival leather group Pittard Garner. The Commission’s findings are expected this week.
