LIFE SAVING Although it did not attain the standard of previous years, the Christchurch Boys' High School team won the Sir John Hall Shield for the third consecutive year at the Centennial Pool on Saturday. The team was competing in the annual Canterbury secondary schools’ life-saving competition. The girls’ teams in the Monica Thacker Shield competition displayed a much higher standard of life-saving than the boys. Christchurch Girls’ High School regained the trophy, taken from it last year by Burnside High School. This year Burnside had only one member of its 1988 combination. Results:— Sir John Hall Shield: Christchurch B.H.S. (Michael Fitzgerald, Glen Schrader, Michael Parker, Kelvin Giddens; instructor, Jason Power), 608 points, 1; Christ's College A, 539, 2; Christ's College B, 521, 3. Hyun, who won the Olympic doubles title with Yang Young-ja, had a match point at 21-20 in the second game after battling back from an 11-3 deficit. But Li held out and won the next three points to even the contest then won the third game 21-17. Chen Jing, the Olympic singles. champion, followed with another victory after being behind.
