O’Kane wins qualifier
PA Preston, Lancashire Dene O’Kane, who last week denied rumours he was considering quitting the game, has reached the last 32 of the world individual snooker championships at Preston. The 26-year-old Aucklander’s comprehensive 10-5 victory over promising Canadian Alain Robidoux delays his return to New Zealand for a holiday. But it gives him a chance to end a
season of mixed fortunes on a high note. His reward for this excellent display is an opening day meeting at Sheffield with the world No. 2, Jimmy White, on April 15. And it gives O’Kane a chance to earn revenge for his meeting with the Cockney star in the world championships two years ago. On that occasion O’Kane reached the quarter-finals only to lose 13-6 to White. “I am looking forward to playing at Sheffield because I
am really playing well at the moment," O’Kane said. “I could not be playing anybody better than Jimmy. “Last time I gave him a fright but this time I hope I can go better still.” O'Kane started memorably against Robidoux taking the opening six frames with breaks of 50, 74, and 52. When the former lumberjack chopped his lead by three, O’Kane hit back with further breaks of 56 and 54 before going on to seal the victory.
