Chorusancient and modern

The chorus — a theatrical form that is as old as antiquity — will be the subject of a workshop by Ralph Johnson at Scott Block in the Arts Centre on April 7 to 9. Johnson has had a passion for chorus since studying it under Francis Batten at Drama Action Centre in Sydney. He has taught chorus in Wellington and in Christchurch at Fringe ‘B9. The chorus is the great linking device between the audience and the heroes; between humanity and the gods; between the individual and society. Choric movement lies between acting and dance and the choric voice between speech and song. Johnson will also be holding a series of advanced chorus classes on Thursday evenings starting on April 13 at 7 p.m. in Room All. Enrolment information is available from Biddy Grant at the Southern Regional Arts Council, telephone 662-337 or 662-072.
