Bid to stop sabotage
PA Auckland Security will be tightened at Auckland Regional Authority bus depots to prevent the sabotage of its vehicles. The A.R.A.’s transport director, Wayne McDonald, said during the recent engineers’ strike some buses had tail-lights broken, tyres punctured, and electrical wires ripped. Nobody had been iden-
tified as causing the damage, but Mr McDonald said security patrols would be increased at depots. “We are digging in for a long dispute,” said the secretary of the Engineers’ Union, Jim Butterworth. The striking engineers are responsible for maintaining buses as well as the A.R.A. sewage treatment and bulk water supply systems.
