School uniforms
Sir,—Once again we are reminded about the high costs of school uniforms, especially for girls. I thought New Zealanders were a nation of do-it-yourselfers and I get cross when people complain about the high cost when there are several alternatives. Making girls’ uniforms is not a hard job, and two should last two to three years and, may I add, is very economical. There is a “nearly new” scheme running in most schools and good uniforms can be bought this way very cheaply. Boys’ uniforms are not expensive compared with the usual cost of shorts and a nice shirt; in fact most are cheaper. I love seeing the school uniform worn and would fight against it being abolished. Anyway, ask any mother whose child (girls especially) does not wear a uniform, and she will tell you of the daily hassles of dressing in mufti. I guarantee those stories will have you dashing out to acquire a uniform. — Yours, etc., N. M. SAXBY-GOSS. March 28, 1989.
