Faces of jobless crowd advts

By

A kaleidoscope of the faces of the unemployed are a focal point of the $1.5 million campaign mounted by the Employment Service of the Department of Labour to place 50,000 people in jobs. The service’s general manager, Mr George Hickton, said yesterday that the a campaign was part of a change of emphasis. “We’re not here to simply register people for the dole, we’re here to try to provide work for people.” The campaign, which began yesterday and will last until November, aims to raise employer awareness of the service. Although the campaign will cost $1.5 million, Mr Hickton said it was a costeffective way of bringing the needs of more than 150,000 registered unemployed to employers. “It is slightly less than $lO per person that we represent for a full year’s advertising," he said. Dozens of faces appear in three television advertisements which will be run in two-week bursts.
