Wool delayed
Shipping difficulties are frustrating attempts by exporters to restore markets in Europe for wool, says the New Zealand Council of Wool Exporters in its market preview. The executive manager of the council, Mr Bill Carter, said the delays had compounded from the New Zealand Shipping Corporation dispute, in spite of attempts by shipping companies to rearrange cargoes. “These delays could not have come at a worse time. Exporters need everything going for them if they are to res-
tore the credibility of New Zealand wool in Europe.” A revival of European markets was needed to compensate for fewer sales to China. A positive sign for wool sales was the apparent revival in the Japanese market for woven cloth. The cheaper woven textiles used lambs’ wool and were a substitute for the more expensive fine Merino cloths. The council said it expected little change in auction prices during the next two months, unless there was a change in currency values.
