Hostel fund-raising intensified
The Christchurch Y.M.C.A. has begun approaching firms, organisations and individuals for donations to its new hostel appeal. About $500,000 is sought, with $45,000 raised so far. The chairman of the appeal committee, Mr Allan Dingwall, said that the pressure for raising money was now on, with the summer holidays and end-of-year tax payments out of the way. He hoped that the personal approaches would give a good boost to the total. Construction of the sixstorey hostel opposite the Christchurch Arts Centre and Botanic Gardens is under way.
There will be more than 200 beds, with an emphasis on safe, clean accommodation for young people at a reasonable cost.
The new building will be linked to the existing recreation centre, with a common reception.
Mr Dingwall said the committee was optimistic abdSit raising the mtoey needed for the hostel.
