Police put search on hold
The police will wait until the end of the week before mounting a search in the Mount Cook area for two overseas climbers. Constable Bill Apes, of Lake Tekapo, said it was probable the pair had left the area without telling anyone and were headed for Nelson. There are no immediate fears for their safety. “We’ll make a few inquiries up there over the next few days. If they don’t turn up by the end of the week we’ll start a search,” he said. The climbers, an Austrian, Dieter Johan and an Australian, Michael Hirnbreck, were due at Fox Glacier via the Copland Pass last Wednesday. It is believed they might have taken another route. “There have been a number of cases this season where climbers have left the Mount Cook region without telling anyone, putting park staff and the police to a considerable amount of inconvenience,” Constable Apes said.
