Teenagers embark on run

Twenty teen-age boys in Social Welfare care will embark on a return run from Picton to Queenstown today as part of a rehabilitation programme. The Newmans 2000 run has been organised by staff at the department’s Kohitere corrective institution near Levin. A similar 1000 km run was held in the lower North Island last year. The youth aid officer at Blenheim, Mr Ralph Gillispie, said last year’s North Island run had proved successful. “Half the kids have never done anything more physical than carrying away things from burglaries. This is an opportunity for them to learn there is a bit more to life.”
