Top seeds successful
Michael Penman’s remarkable run of squash successes came to an end in the final of the Christchurch pre-season tournanment yesterday when he was beaten in straight sets by the top seed, Rod Hayes.
Penman, the recent winner of the New Zealand under 23 title, had eliminated the second seed, Paul Viggers, in the semi-finals, but Hayes had his measure in the final. The women’s top seed, Justine Marriott, also won her final in straight sets although the third seeded Philippa Beams, aged 18, came close to taking the third game. Beams made the final at the expense of the second seed, Freda Walker. MEN Open, semi-finals: R. W. Hayes beat M. Allred, 9-3, 9-7, 10-8; M. Penman beat P. T. Viggers, 4-9, 9-4, 9-4, 9-0. Final: Hayes beat Penman, 93, 9-3, 9-4. WOMEN Open, semi-finals: J. Marriott beat C. Oakley, 4-9, 9-0, 9-3, 9-1; P. Beams beat F. Walker, 9-2, 3-9, 9-2, 9-1. Final: Marriott beat Beams, 9-2, 9-4, 10-9.
