PA Wellington New Zealand and international companies are clamouring for the right to incorporate the Rugby Union’s stylised All Black silver fern among their products.
In the two months since Canterbury International, a subsidiary of Lane Walker Rudkin Industries, was granted the exclusive world-wide marketing rights to the fern, demand from licencees has been amazing, the New Zealand Rugby Union’s marketing manager for Canterbury International, Mr Scott Campbell, said. “The scope of the demand has been curbed only by the creativity of the people involved,” Mr Campbell said.
Other areas where Canterbury International is looking for licencees is for terms such as flags, watches and radio cassettes.
“At this stage, we are concentrating on only
New Zealand manufacturers. This gives them the opportunity to supply the rest of the world if they have the willingness or capability to meet the forecasted demands,” Mr Campbell said.
“Once the New Zealand market is established, we will be more serious in our intentions overseas, such as Japan, Europe and the United States. “The interest we have seen shows us the amazing potential of the stylised silver fern,” he said.
Preliminary discussions have already been held with the Home Unions to tie in with the All Black tour at the end of this year, and also with the British Columbian union for one match to be played in Canada after the British tour.
“The potential for New Zealanders to pick up and run with the silver fern cannot be overstated,” Mr Campbell said.
