Abelard was a philosopher, poet and charismatic leader in the church, Heloise a scholar and great beauty. Together they challenged the foundations of the medieval world and brought upon themselves and their love a terrible vengeance. The play is an affirmation of the human spirit to love and endure. It is a large-cast play with some fine roles. The Roles Peter Abelard — will be played by Lex Matheson. Heloise — will be played by Sherrill Cooper. Guibert — Youngish. Abelard’s serving-man. An appealing character who unwittingly is instrumental in Abelard’s downfall. Needs to sing and play a simple medieval musical instrument. Gilles de Vannes — Canon of Notre Dame. 70 years. Described as fat and florid, sympathetic, worldly-wise, and irreverent. A large role — an excellent character. Fulbert — Heloise’s uncle. An aged and excitable eccelesiastic. thin and spiderish. There is a dangerous naivete about him. Important role. Robert de Montboissier — A novice monk. Young and passionate. Important role. Alberic of Rheims — Severe and vengeful. Middle-aged. Two scenes but good Bernard of Clairvaux —An ascetic abbot. character roles. An austere figure. Abbess of Argenteuil — A strong-minded woman but compassionate with a taste for wine. Important role. Sister Godric — Elderly and Irish. An old bent figure but still sharp in mind and warm-hearted in character. One good scene. Gerard Students of Abelard at the schools of Notre Dame. Philippe Double as monks. Small speaking roles hut plenty of 4th Student action. Jehan — Gilles’servant. ijl i n . Hugh — A ountryman. ust could be doubled. I Laura '■ GheHa 3 Nuns. Small speaking roles but plenty of action. Constance Belle Alys — A beautiful young whore. Small but important role. Denise — A placid countrywoman, sister to Abelard. One good scene. Could double as a nun. A bill ty to sing would bean asset for n uns, monks and students. Are you up to it? Are you up to having fun while you keep fit?
