New Zealanders leave in droves

PA Wellington More people left New Zealand to live overseas in the year to February than in any of the last nine years, latest figures show.

Provisional Statistics Department figures given this week, show 70,897 people left New Zealand either permanently or long-term in the year to February, compared with 62,261 the previous year. The figure is the highest since 1980, when 77,612 people left. Permanent or long-term arrivals for the year to February numbered 46,293, making a net migration loss of 24,600, a big jump on the previous

year’s figure of 14,000. Net migration is the! difference between resi—’ dents leaving the country j and intending to stay g away more than a year,’] and people arriving from i overseas who intend to\’ stay more than a year. The figure for net mi-; gration loss is also highest since 1980, when t the net loss was 36,632. Except for two years * when there were net - gains of 1634 (1983) and 7669 (1984), net losses in t the last nine years ranged from 13,884 in 1982 to 23,740 in 1983.
