300 police apply for Namibia contingent
More than 300 police have applied to be part of the contingent asked to join a United Nations peace-keeping force in Namibia.
Applications have been sought although the Cabinet has yet to approve the United Nations request for 38 police, made up of one chief inspector or inspector, seven seniorsergeants or sergeants, and 20 constables. The United Nations wants the peace-keeping force in place by the end of April.
Ms Kaye Calder, a spokeswoman for police media services, said the processing of the applications had started.
Applicants should know the outcome next week. Ms Calder said a final group of applicants, perhaps up to 50, would probably be taken to the police college in the middle of April to receive a political overview of the Namibian situation and to complete formalities. The final 38 would then be selected.
