Local-content campaign stepped up
PA Auckland As the date for the new Broadcasting Act draws closer, the campaign to get a local content quota on to the small screen is being stepped up. Prominent New Zealand media personalities and entertainers are ask-
ing fellow Kiwis to help them with their fight to have a compulsory minimal level of home-made television programmes. The Make It New Zealand Campaign, made up from members of the film and television industry, has placed large ad-
vertisments in two national newspapers, to urge New Zealanders to protest at the present non-quota. Media Women co-ordi-nator and one of the campaign’s instigators, Mary Varnham, said the ads were the best way to stir up public debate
about the Broadcasting Bill and the quota. Ms Varnham said the low local content on New Zealand screens was symptomatic of the way New Zealanders were being flooded with foreign economics, work habits and an inappropriate television culture.
