WATER SKI RACING

Australian skiers took the honours in both men’s and women’s sections at the world group HI championships held on Tauranga Harbour (first day) and Lake Okerika, Rotorua. Two races were held each day, the women’s race of 45mins and the men’s event of 60min. New Zealand had mixed fortunes on the first day. Kyliejjorris, of Christchurch, led Mr team-mate. Sharron

Reeves, of Rotorua, for over half the women’s race, but Morris had an untimely fall and victory went to an Australian, Leanne Hickey, with Reeves second. In the men’s race, Tom Curran (Napier) fell early and John Scott (Christchurch) also fell in a rough , section of the course when challenging Jamie Oliver (Australia) for second place. Scott completed the race and was then taken to hospital for observation. The race was won by Murray Brown, of Australia. On the second day, Morris again led early, but Hickey took control after 40min and won well from Morris and Angela Williams, of Napier. Brown repeated his success in the men’s race, beating Curran and Scott, who led early but battled against the injuries sustained on the first day. Final over-all results: Men: M. Brown (Australia), 1; J. Oliver (Australia), 2; J. Scott (New Zealand) 3. Points:. Australia 3929, New Zealand 2792. Women: L. Hickey (Australia) 1; S. Reeves (New Zealand), 2; K. RUGBY LEAGUE NZPA-Reuter London

Wigan will this week ask the New Zealand Rugby League for permission to keep Kevin Iro in Britain until the Challenge Cup final on April 29. The formidable young Kiwi centre is due to return to Auckland at the end of March but Wigan coach Graham Lowe said after the semifinal triumph over Warrington: “We will be approaching the New Zealand authorities and I am confident they will let him stay.” But the N.Z.R.L. executive director, Michael Knowles, said yesterday no exception would be made to the regulations which require Iro to play in Auckland until the week-end of April 15 and 16. It was elder brother, Tony Iro, who made his mark for Wigan in their Easter fixture at Oldham.

A try by him on the hour gave Wigan a hard-earned 2721 lead but it still needed a last-ditch tackle from Dean Bell to prevent a possible equaliser in the dying minutes.

The win confirmed Lowe’s promise that Wigan have not given up the championship chase on a day wteen two Athor fnn cidoc I nno.

time leader Castleford was edged out, 32-30, by next-to-last Hull K.R., and Hull dropped out of the top four with a 25-22 defeat at Featherstone.

All of this was excellent news for Leeds and Widnes. Everyone’s favourite to lift the title, Widnes won handsomely, 44-16, at St Helens. Saints, who revealed this week they have offered Swinton’s New Zealand loose forward Mike Kuiti a two year contract, were briefly on terms through a Shane Cooper try. But Widnes then ran riot with Martin Offiah scoring a brilliant hat-trick. St Helens trails Leeds, 2320 winners over doomed Halifax, by a point but have no less than four matches in hand. Castleford and Wigan have played a game more than Widnes and are three points behind. Warrington beat Salford 186 to dispel any lingering relegation fears while in the Second Division Leigh became mathematically certain of the championship by beating Swinton 35-24. Division one: Featherstone 25, Hull 22; Halifax 20, Leeds 23; Hull Kingston Rovers 32, Castleford 30; Oldham 21, Wigan 27; St Helens 16, Widnes 44; Warrington 18, Salford 6.
