Westminster in line to end campaign on winning note

Special correspondent Auckland The top Cambridge galloper, Westminster, is well placed to end his current campaign on a winning note when he tackles the $200,000 Television New Zealand Stakes at Ellerslie tomorrow.

The fine four-year-old has twice tried to win a feature weight-for-age middledistance event this season and oh each occasion he has had to settle for third.

The first time was in the Cambridge Stud International Stakes (2000 m at Te Rapa in February when he was given a nice run by top Sydney jockey Peter Cook and wound up behind Regal City and Horlicks. And it was the same pair (reversing their placings) which downed him in the $1 million D.B. Draught Classic (2100 m at Ellerslie on March 4. Westminster doesn't have such strong opposition tomorrow and he is sure to be right in the thick of it over the final stages.

It will be his second start at the Auckland Racing Club’s Easter meeting, coming on top of his gallant fourth behind Regal City, Trissaring and Squire Gray in the $150,000 Bayleys and Easter (Group One). “He’s come through the Easter run really well,” said trainer Ngaire Fraser. "In fact I feel he may have been a run short last Saturday. I would have been too kind to him before the race.”

Maurice Campbell again travels north from Awapuni to take the mount on Westminster on Saturday. Savana City, Sirstaci, Bonecrusher, Tricavaboy, Solstice and Trissaring are all certain to have good followings in the Jetbet: 2

TVNZ Stakes and seem set for bold showings. Savana City, winner of last year's A.J.C. Oaks at Randwick, has come up well in this latest campaign. She won fresh-up at Ellerslie over 1400 metres, beating Sirstaci and Courier Bay, then she was caught right on the line by Latitude in the Booth Insurance Galilee Stakes at Te Awamutu before returning to the same course 12 days later (March 23) and bolting home by eight lengths in an open 1600-metre heat. Sirstaci and Tricavaboy were unlucky runners in the Bayleys Easter both being held up over the final stages. Sirstaci wound up fifth, right on Westminster’s heels, at the finish and he will be a most interesting runner on Saturday as it will be his first attempt over ground. He finishes his races well so should handle the 2000 metres.

Tricavaboy finished thirteenth, about six lengths from the winner, in the Bayleys Easter and was fourth in this race last year and also fourth in February’s Air New Zealand Stakes over this course and distance.

Bonecrusher let his supporters down in the $1 million D.B. Draught Classic (Weight-for-age 2100 m), but he is too good to overlook. His work since that outing has been pleasing and an improved effort can be expected tomorrow.

Solstice was a run short when beaten into second by Fool’s Fortune on the first day and Trissaring goes into the TVNZ Stakes with a creditable second in the Bayleys Easter.
