High hopes for Verners at Awapuni

Special correspondent Wellington With Let’s Race in the $50,000 Wrightson Bloodstock Breeders’ Stakes and Three Tone in the $40,000 Hotel Association Cup (2300 m the father and son training partnership of Ray and Kerry Verner look to have an excellent chance of dual success when they are represented at the Manawatu Racing Club’s meeting at Awapuni tomorrow. The Racing Is Fun filly Let’s Race is in the Breeders’ Stakes and Three Tone will tackle the Hotel Cup. Let’s Race is in good form, though she will have to be for the Breeders’ Stakes field could not be stronger. The filly raced just last week when second behind Grey Invader at Pukekohe but the best guide to her chances tomorrow may be the third placings she achieved in the Lindauer Stakes at Ellerslie. Wednesday. Let’s Race will face strong northern opposition, notably the "Filly of the Year” co-winner, Olga’s Pal, and Sarah Fay, which have both been in excellent form this season.

But there are a number of up-and-comers, like Horlicks’ half-sister, Carnival, a last-start fourth at Counties, Waikeeper, Taupey Girl and Amusement are last-start northern winners, while Bon Cher won the Warstep Stakes at Riccarton just last Monday. Trinian and Fun On The Run are Central Districts fillies, which have shown form in lowerclass races. How they shape up in tomorrow’s company remains to be seen. Danish Delight will be looking to show that her run at Ellerslie two starts back was out of character.

Three Tone, which looked so promising last season, has not been quite as convincing this time round. He was the beaten favourite at Avondale earlier in the month.
