Cameron trying for big start to senior career

By

DAVID McCARTHY

Jan Cameron ended her successful ap- • prenticeship at Riccarton on Wednesday, one of the relatively few southern apprenctices to ride ; more than 100 winners during her time, and she could start her new career as a senior rider on a high note at Riccarton again tomorrow.

Cameron, aged 19, takes the ride on St James in the Race Images Stakes a $30,000 1600 m feature which has produced an open betting line-up and a classy field. Cameron partnered the big horse in the Air New Zealand Classic at Riccar-

niversay Handicap (1600 m before failing in the D.B. 1600 after which he was off colour. He has raced consistently since joining the Prendergast stable in December, one of his best wins being in the White Robe Lodge Stakes in record time for the 1600 m distance.

ton on Monday and the pair ended up a creditable fifth. It was St James’s first tilt at 2000 m and he switches back to his favourite distance tomorrow. Cameron, whose biggest win so far has been in another metric mile, the Timaru Cup, on Shorty Bijou, would find victory with St James especially appropriate. The horse is trained by her employers, Tony and Lyn Prendergast, who have played a major role in the young rider’s success. Their interest is appreciated to the extent that Cameron will continue to work at the stable even though her apprenticeship is over. It has been a lengthy one with two breaks of six months extending the normal apprenticeship time considerably but St James’s effort tomorrow could be another reason to make it worthwhile. Before Monday St James had campaigned at Trentham, winning the An-

St James has drawn wide tomorrow and his biggest problem recently has been his reluctance to settle. He seems to relax for Cameron and will appreciate any rain. His task is not easy with smart metricmilers like Margarella and Irish Anchor in the field. Margarella showed her mettle on Monday just failing in the Air New Zealand and is better, if anything, over 1600 m. Irish Anchor lacks experience but nothing on the score of experience and this distance will suit him better than the 1400 m of the Great Easter. Robinski, Pericolini, the impressive Easter winner. Dashing King, and the classy Hot Ice are all foes to be respected. Any rain would help some of them but none more than St James. The big horse has had a busy season but he

looks capable of ending it on a high. There are equally absorbing aspects to the other handicap feature, the Great 'Autumn Stakes. The Air New Zealand Classic winner Palastone defends his three-strong winning streak with top weight over more ground and should acquit himself well. But strong challenges are likely to come from the northern stayers, Mr Milsom and Orapai, the latter impressive in the Air New Zealand and since.

Mr Milsom ws desperately unlucky not to win the Dunedin Cup and a repeat of that form will make him hard to bowl. Reykjavik, the winner of that race, is in with a leading chance while the ever reliable Eye Full will be looking for a change of fortune after two unlucky breaks in her last two starts. She will be partnered by Garry Phillips for the first time, Grant Davison switching to Orapai.
