Hijack duo give up at airport
NZPA-Reuter Frankfurt,
West Germany
Two gunmen hijacked a Hungarian airliner on a Prague to Frankfurt flight yesterday and surrendered to West German police just after landing, an airport spokesman said. The two left the Sovietmade Tupolev 154 plane and surrendered 30 minutes after it landed at 12.32 p.m. (8.32 p.m. N.Z. time). A spokesman for the Hungarian airline Malev said in Budapest that there were no casualties in the drama.
Hungarian Radio said earlier that two men with guns and brandishing hand grenades seized the airliner at Prague. Airport, at first demanding to be taken to the United States.
The plane was reported to be carrying a Hungarian diplomat who offered himself as a hostage, enabling some passengers to be released in the Czechoslovak capital. Hungarian Radio said only 10 passengers were left on board the plane after the offer by Hungary’s consul in Prague, Lajos Taba, to act as hostage.
