High winds put boat up creek
High winds in Greymouth on Tuesday night drove the Owenga 8, a Stewart Island fishing boat, up the Sawyers Creek tributary and almost under a bridge.
The boat was noticed in difficulties on its approach to the harbour bar. It is believed the crew may have been confused in trying to line up the harbour entrance beacons by a car parked on the south tiphead with its lights on high beam. The Owenga was guided in by radio contact with a Greymouth fisherman, Mr Brian Piner.
But it is thought the boat then fouled its propeller, and high winds drove it up the creek entrance.
The Owenga was refloated yesterday afternoon and put on the harbour board slipway
