Vincent in doubt
Canterbury’s top try-scorer of last season, the Marist right wing, Mark Vincent, might well miss the province’s opening match in the South Pacific rugby championship, against Queensland in Brisbane on April 9.
It will be a race against time for Vincent who has broken a small bone in the base of his thumb. The hand is in plaster at present and the Canterbury selectorcoach, Frank Jack, has called in the Marist fullback, Richard Connell, to cover for him. It will be a severe blow for Canterbury if the fleet-footed wing loses the race to fitness. He scored 12 tries for Canterbury last season, missing just one of the province’s 20 matches, and was rated Canterbury’s most improved player. His thirst for tries has not been quenched — he scored five when a Canterbupr XV scored a halfcentury of points against a Tinwald invitation team earlier this month. Another wing in the squad, Andrew Simcock, of University, is poised for a minor milestone should he take the field against Queensland. He has played 11 matches for Canterbury, his twelfth appearance will earn him a Canterbury blazer.
