Chance for James quinella at Tauranga meeting today

Special correspondent Auckland The Matamata trainer, Roger James, holds the key to the Air New Zealand Handicap, the main event at the Bay of Plenty Racing Club’s meeting at Tauranga today. James has two representatives in the 2100-metre event — Sarah Fay and Gribbin — and both have the ability to take the major share of the stake. . Sarah Fay, third in this year’s New Zealand Oaks, ran at Paeroa last Saturday, finishing second to All Nighter after being handy from the outset.

She needed to win that event to guarantee a start in the A.J.C. Oaks in Sydney. That trip is now up in the air and so, too, is a start in this event as

James doesn’t often back his horses up so quickly. If Saran Fay does start she must be the one to beat, while Gribbin and Ngatira Belle look her toughest rivals. Gribbin has just been stepped up to middle distances and she has made a good impression. She was unlucky not to win at Matamata — she finished second to Bon Cher — and then she won attractively at Avondale and again last time. Ngatira Belle has been going bold races lately, including a last-start fifth behind Wairere Lord at Paeroa. Golden Flash is another which ran at Paeroa last Saturday, finishing fourth to All Nighter and Sarah Fay, while Tristeke would come right into calculation with any easing of the ground.
