40-strong N.Z. force to Namibia?

By

BRENDON BURNS

in Wellington

New Zealand has been asked to contribute 40 police personnel to assist with peace-keeping duties in Namibia after South Africa’s withdrawal. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Marshall, announced the United Nations’ request on his return to Wellington from a visit to Japan, the Middle East and Australia. He said the cost of sending a police contingent would have to be borne by New Zealand. Mr Marshall said he had told the United Nations 18 months ago that New Zealand was prepared to play a greater role in peace-keeping forces. “It’s just that we hadn’t quite bargained on so much peace breaking out,” he said last evening.

New Zealand had a peacekeeping team in Iran and another in the Sinai peninsula.
