Horse-riding in park proposed
A proposal for horseriding in Hagley Park is being considered by the Christchurch City Council’s parks and recreation committee.
At a meeting of the committee yesterday, Ms Maryrose Leversedge outlined a proposal to designate an area in the park for stables and a track. Similar horse-riding facilities were offered in Moore Park, Sydney, and Hyde Park, London, she said.
Several committee members asked Ms Leversedge about the suitability of other sites but she replied that Hagley Park was ideal being central and scenic. Riding would be allowed only in specified areas, with guides available to lead horses. Galloping was not envisaged, she said. The privately run business would be controlled because regulations could be drawn up by the council. The land would be leased and the track maintained by an agreement with the council.
Ms Leversedge said the venture was aimed mainly at Christchurch residents but would also appeal to
visitors. Other advantages she cited included employment opportunities, training facilities for public and police use, park security and increased trade for surrounding businesses. While committee members were largely in favour of the idea some expressed reservations about siting the stables in the park and made suggestions that sites nearby could be used. A report on the proposal will be considered by the committee at a future meeting. Neighbourhood plan The council’s neighbourhood improvement plan for Sydenham has been made public for debate. It aims to improve the appearance and character of the area by developing streets and open spaces. The draft plan conforms with objectives of the City Plan to improve traffic circulation and safety and improve pedestrian and landscape links between community facilities. The aims would be
achieved by deterring the use of local roads by through traffic and encouraging tree planting and grass berms. Development of existing reserves and suggestions of areas for future reserves are also included. Merivale reserve An open lawn area bordered with brick pathways and shrubbery, seating, and large deciduous trees is included in the concept plan for the Merivale Reserve or Village Green planned for Papanui Road. The committee approved the plan and the parks and recreation department will finalise it in consultation with the local community. The plan has been discussed with the chairman of the Merivale Precinct Society and details will be included in the society’s newsletter. It will also be displayed in the Merivale Mall. A preliminary estimate for the total reserve development is $17,500. An initial sum of $5OOO is available in this year’s budget and the balance will be included in the 1989/90 draft budget.
