M.P. queries doctors’ fees
Political reporter Claims from constituents about doctors charges have prompted the member of Parliament for Avon, Mr Larry Sutherland, to find out whether patients are benefiting from increases in General Medical Services benefits. “I am distressed at the medical expenses being faced by my constitutents,” said Mr Sutherland last evening. “There are claims that the increase in prescription charges has not been offset by significantly lower doctors charges.’ Mr Sutherland has referred several cases to the Minister of Health, Ms Clark, and he has also asked doctors serving his electorate for charging details. The primary health care package, which came into effect last month, increased the benefit received by doctors and prescription charges. The Government expected, but did not compel doctors to pass the benefit increases on to patients in the form of reduced charges.
