PA Wellington When Parliament resumed at 2 p.m. yesterday the Speaker, Mr Burke, read a recommendation from the Governor-General, Sir Paul Reeves, that money be appropriated for a number of bills. The Leader of the House, Mr Hunt, moved that Mr Bill Dillon (Lab., Hamilton East) be appointed acting deputy chairman of committees. This was agreed by Parliament. Mr Koro Wetere (Lab., Western Maori) presented the petition of Egmont County Council, Waimate Plains District Council and others asking for legislation to stop Egmont and Waimate councils being included in South Taranaki district as proposed by the Local Government Commission. Mr George Gair (Nat., North Shore) presented the petition of Frank Wallace and 530 others asking for a reversal of New Zealand Post’s decision to stop services at Lake Road Post Office, Belmont. Ms Judy Keall (Lab., Glenfield) presented the petition of Max Kayser and 1920 others asking for full services to be retained at Chartwell Avenue Post Office, Glenfield. ' Mr Warren Kyd (Nat.,

Clevedon) presented the petition of Robert Carter and 28 others asking that the Government should recognise the valuable role of Papakura Military Camp and keep it open. Mr John Terris (Lab., Western Hutt) presented the petition of Mary Sloane on behalf of Kelson Kindergarten committee and 29 others asking for telephone rental subsidies for non-profit organisations to be retained. The report of the Electoral Law Select Committee on the inquiry into the 1987 General Election and the Government response to the inquiry were tabled. Ministers answered 22 questions. Mr Burke turned down a request by Mr John Banks (Nat., Whangarei), for a debate on the latest crime statistics released by the Police National Headquarters on Monday. Vicky Emery of Wainuiomata and 776 others requesting that the Government consider urban transport subsidies. He also presented a report on the petition by Nancy Marshall and 13 others requesting that learner drivers be required to obtain a learner’s permit from the local issuing office. Mr Hunt moved that urgency be taken to pass through the rest of their stages the School Trustees Bill, the Corporations (Investigation and Management) Bill, and the Poultry Board Act Repeal Bill. This was agreed after a division of 44 votes to 27. • Debate on the School Trustees Bill began and was interrupted when Parliament adjourned for dinner at 5.30 p.m. Debate continued when the House resumed at 7.30 p.m. The bill was passed through its second reading and M.P.s then began debating the committee stages. . Debate was interrupted when the House adjourned at midnight.
