Youth cricket
The New Zealand youth cricket team is chasing 340 runs after the first day of play in a two-day match against the Australian Institute of Sport side at Adelaide. Australia won the toss and was all out for 340 after 92 overs. “We thought when we saw the wicket and the very fast outfield that we’d be chasing about 380 runs,” the New Zealand manager, John Thomson, said. “We managed to contain them and we’re quite happy with that score,” he said. Stephen Hotter, of Wellington, aggravated a back injury while bowling and is to return to New Zealand. Australia 340 (B. Williams 75, J. Cox 74, B. Julian 56, P. Drinnan 48; K. O’Dowda three for 78, S. Thomson one for 16, C. Ross three for 85). New Zealand one for none after two overs.—NZPA.
