Trackwork

Timaru PA Timaru Louisa Mary, a filly trained by Maurice Jones, took time honours during trackwork at Phar Lap Raceway yesterday and looks in fine shape for the Riccarton Turf Club’s on course only meeting tomorrow. The Solaboy filly, placed second at Riccarton to La Meilleure, has not had a lot of luck in her races but has the ability to win. She always had the measure of Titan Star (H. Pateman) over 800 m on the fast course proper in a sizzling 47.7, the last 600 m in 36.85 yesterday. Whitford Fun (K. Ramsey), back in after a brief spell, worked with Sunday Morning (S. Clarke) over. 600 m in 37.91. Royal Tribute (L. Boake) and Royal Splendour (S. Morrison) were locked together after 800 m in 47.85, the last 600 m taking 36.37. Lady Tyack (S. Clarke) which missed the start at Cromwell, reeled off 600 m in 38.36 on her own and Royal Chimes (D. Holden) was never in top gear running 800 m in 55.2, the last 600 in 41.5. Bewildering (S. Clarke) was keen to improve on 1:02.2 for 1000 m alongside Windvale Birdie (K. Ramsey). They clipped the last 800 m in 48.8, the last 600 m in 37.1. Bewildering was stood on during the race at Rangiora, losing half a plate and a portion of her foot. She was sore on returning to scale so that rim is best forgotten. Don Pedro (H. Pate-

man) led Andy Regan (D. Holden) after 1000 m in 1:05. They ran the opening 400 m in a swift 23.8, coming home the final 600 in 41.2. Awapuni Special correspondent Palmerston North Charmante, a good second at Hastings last week after winning well at her previous start, worked impressively at Awapuni on Monday in preparation for the Marton meeting here today. Charmante will be the one to beat in the Hurley’s Handicap though no rider has been confirmed for her yet. Usual rider, Noel Harris, cannot make Charmante’s weight of 52kg, so trainer Margaret Bull will have to look elsewhere. Working on the plough Charmante put plenty of zest into her task, running the last 600 m of two rounds in 38.5, time she could have improved upon if she had been ridden out. Trinian and Irish River, both top winning prospects today, shared an 800 m trial in 52.4, the last 600 m in 39. Trinian has thrived since running second at Woodville. She should win the Criterion Handicap while Irish River is a smart maiden likely to go well in the Castlecliff. Apple Brown Betty, which is against Trinian today, completed 1000 m in 1:6, the last 600 m in 39. She failed at Woodville, but is capable of better. First Sensation, which is a likely improver for the highweight, ran the last 600 m of two rounds in 39 and Aaron took 40. He did well to run third at Hastings last week and should trouble the others in the Awapuni Maiden. Count Glen, on the ballot list in the first, ran 1000 m keenly in 1:5, 6oom in 39. Hot Cross impressed over 1000 m in 1:5.4, the last 600 m very fast in 36.4.
