Fish gain for Carter

PA Wellington Carter Holt Harvey’s Chilean fishing associate, Pesquera Iquique, SA, has reported a 124 per cent profit lift to $U517,546,000 (SNZ2B.S million) for the year ended December 1988.

The result compared with the company’s SUS7.BM (SNZI2.7M) profit for the previous year. Carter Holt has 46.9 per cent of Pesquera, a stake which it bought in July, 1987. CHH executive director, Mr Richard Carter, said the company’s total fish catch last year was 321,000 tonnes, which when combined with the catches of various affiliates, reached a total of 580,000 tonnes.

The catch was converted primarily to fish meal, fish oil, and various canned products, international prices for which had been firm, Mr Carter said.

Exploratory fishing of deeper water had been commenced with some encouraging results but considerably more work had to be done in order to establish commercial resources, he said.
