SPEEDWAY A young Polish speedway rider, Rysard Dolomisiewcz, continued his fine form when he won the penultimate round of the Continental Airlines world series at Ruapuna Park International speedway on Monday evening. Dolomisiewcz, aged 22, headed the 12-strong field that had been brought together by the former world champion, Ivan Mauger. Dolomisiewcz finished the qualifying heats in third equal place with eight points, the same as the Australian, Troy Butler, with the top qualifiers being New Zealand’s Gary Allan and Piotr Swist, of Poland, both only dropping a point from their four races. Both Allan and Butler thrilled the large crowd with their hard racing style with the New Zealander setting two new track records in his first outing. The two were set to meet in the final qualifying heat and Butler led from the tapes with Allan a close second. Coming out of the Prison bend for the first lap, Allan briefly took the lead but Butler came back to lead for the rest of the opening lap. Both riders were locked together going into the Prison bend on lap two but Butler drifted wide and by the time he regained his racing line both Allan and West Germany’s Carsten Pelzmann had shot by with the placings remaining the same until the finish. >d The first semi-final went to Dolomisiewcz with New Zealand’s Larry Ross second and Allan third. England's Neil Evitts was a clear winner of the other semi-final with Butler second from Pelzmann. In the final, Dolomisiewcz went quickly into the lead and the Polish test rider was never really threatened. Evitts took second from Pelzmann. YACHTING The biggest fleet the Banks Peninsula Cruising Club has mustered this season, 43 boats, contested a harbour race over 12 miles ia a 15knot nor’easterly breeze at the week-end. Coriakin (K. Baronian) the 40ft Colin Childs-designed mast-head sloop, found fine form to take handicap honours by 6min in the first division. Second on corrected time was the unstoppable Natural Magic (T. Atkinson) with Fireball (F. Simpson) third. Fireball, along with Southern Fun (McMillin group), had the misfortune to run aground on Shag Reef. Southern Fun hit the reed giving

second place to Archon (A. and W. Archer). Substantial damage is expected on the boat once outof- the-water inspections have been done. Although Southern Fun hardly lost any time because of the incident, several crew members suffered some heavy bruising and knocks. Archon proved that recent modifications made to her ballast arrangements have been very successful and appear to have given her a real speed edge on the rest of the fleet. In the second division, Bacchus TT (M. Hore and R. Allan) came home first agains followed Imin later by Garry Ward’s Limited Addition which was first on handicap. Squonk was second and Vamoos (J. Dyksma) third. Stream Train (D. Norris) returned to racing after a bad swamping earlier this year. It had probably its best race of the season, finishing third ahead of some much larger boats. Steam Traub was fourth on handicap. The cruising division drew 20 starters, with line honours going to Mah Jong (G. Robertson), with Valencia (E. Patterson) second and Rebeccah 111 (C. Laing ) third. First on handicap was Swiftsure (B. Mead), second Mah Jong and third Cygnet (D. Latimore). VOLLEYBALL Hornby High School in the girls section and Christchurch Boys’ High School in the boys section had the most impressive records in the top four secondary schools volleyball competitions second round played at Pioneer Stadium over the week-end. Hornby won all its games 3-0 with the two setters, Diane Hill and Anita Woodham, in good form and the all round skills of Fiona Watts and Tracy Bryant to the fore. Hillmorton also had an impressive two days, winning three games. Its 3-1 defeat at the hands of Otago Girls’ High School was the most exciting game of the girls section. Linwood High School showed improvement to win three games but Bumside High School was a disappointment, winning only one from four outings. Christchurch B.H.S. was the only unbeaten side in its competition. It downed the top Dunedin side, Kavanagh, 3-1, and also dropped a set against Otago Boys High and Kings High School before

completing a 3-0 win over Logan Park. Players to shine for Boys’ High were Angus Gardiner for his work in the front court and the two setters, Lincoln Blair and Richard Bullock. The defending champion, Hornby, won three from four to improve on its first round efforts while Shirley Boys’ High School had a two wintwo loss record. Nick Petrie, with his centre hitting and blocking, was the most prominent Shirley player while Bevan Seddon’s strong hitting was a feature of Cashmere High School’s play in spite of its one winthree loss record. WATER SKI-ING Canterbury competitors took six titles at the Shell national water ski racing championships on Wellington harbour at the week-end. The men’s and women’s open events were both won by Christchurch ski racers, John Scott and the youthful Kyle Morris, respectively. A probable seventh title went begging when John Phillips, the favourite in the A class, had the misfortune of having his boat fail to start. Canterbury placings were:— Men.— Open: John Scott 1.
