CYCLING Burnside High School and Christchurch Boys’ High School provided the highlights on the track, and Invercargill and Dunedin riders were top performers in the individual road races at the South Island schools’ cycling championships in Christchurch last week-end.

Burnside High School’s team was bolstered by two national track cycling medal winners, Tony Creelman and Chris Scott. This pair, along with Andrew Shipley and Steve Bayley, returned the fastest qualifying time of Imin 55s and went on to win the 16 years boys’ 1600 m Italian team pursuit championships. Linwood High School proved particularly strong in the girls’ over 16 years grade by winning first and second places on the track, with Villa Maria College first in the under 16 years grade. Douglas Bath, of James Hargest High School, made an honest race of the 30km boys’ over 16 years road race by breaking away about halfway and sprinting to a win ahead of Justin Cameron, of Timaru Boys' High School. Chris Henderson, of Otago Boys’ High School, outsprinted the main bunch to take third place. Glen Thomson, of Otago Boys’ High School, made a good break on the boys’ under 16 years bunch and did not have to work hard to stay away. Sam Park, of Christchurch Boys’ High School, and Mark Ogle, from same school, sprinted for the minor placings. Park came second and Ogle third. 1600 m team pursuit championship.— Boys’ over 16 years: Burnside High School (Steve Bayley, Andrew Shipley, Chris Scott, Tony Creelman) 1, Otago Boys’ High School (Steve Steel, Brent Todd, Chris Henderson, Glen Thomson) 2, Linwood High School (Todd Skilling), Brent Stewart, Andrew Lythe, Richard Rowe) 3.
