Search, rescue centres to close

PA Wellington National aviation search and rescue will be co-ordinated from Lower Hutt from April 1, a Civil Aviation spokesman said yesterday. The two other search and rescue centres in Auckland and Christchurch will be closed with staff contracts terminated. The Civil Aviation division search and rescue coordinator, Mr Terry Knight, said yesterday the closings would not hurt search and rescue operations. It would mean “considerable” savings. Mr Knight said previously the Auckland base was responsible for air and sea searches in the Tasman Sea to the boundary with Australia, north to the boundary with Honolulu, east to the boundary with Tahiti, the South Pole, as well, the Auckland region. Wellington and Christchurch were responsible only for their areas. “The plan is for Wellington to take over from the Auckland and Christchurch centres. It’s a big task, but with the communication and the expertise . we can still achieve what they could for Auckland,” Mr Knight said.

Eight staff members will work in the new headquarters.
