Masked man robs shop A masked man got away with $2OO in cash after bursting into a Dunedin second-hand shop and brandishing what the 74-year-old woman inside thought was a cut-down rifle. The woman, who was not injured, told the police the robbery happened about 4 p.m. on Thursday. The man was wearing a black mask, black jersey, faded jeans and dirty gym boots, she said.—PA. Tree kills man, 63 A Hamilton man, aged 63, died on Thursday when a tree fell on him while he was cutting firewood. Ernest William Howe, retired, was cutting firewood with a chainsaw on a farm at Te Kowhai when the accident happened about 8.30 a.m. said Senior-Sergeant Carl Fischer of the Hamilton police. Mr Howe’s body was found at 1.30 p.m. face-down still clutching the chainsaw with the tree across his back.—PA. Fatal car accident An Auckland man died when the car he was driving left the road near Tatuanui, east of Morrinsville, and rolled into a drain. Victor Allan Cowen, aged 71, retired, of Mount Wellington, died while Fire Service and ambulance officers tried to free him soon after his car left State highway 27 at 1.30 p.m. on Thursday.—PA. Canty composers noted Composers’ Association awards have been made to two Canterbury composers, Philip Norman and Eric Biddington. Mr Norman received a citation for services to New Zealand music, and Mr Biddington an award for achievement. Both composers will perform their works at the University of Canterbury School of Music at 4.30 p.m. tomorrow.
