‘Press’ attitudes
Sir,—lt is a great pity that the editorial staff of “The Press” use negative captions for articles pertaining to the Treaty of Waitangi. For example: “Treaty not unifying symbol — Lange” (February 20). True Mr Lange was discussing some people’s perception of the treaty and he mentioned the extensive negative attitude he perceived in the people of New Zealand. But he did finish with this sentence: “Now it (the treaty) deserves to stand alone as our most powerful unifying symbol. Why can the staff of “The Press” not put forward a positive vision of the future? Why hide the Prime Minister’s positive attitudes behind negative “put-down” captions? — Yours, etc.,
M. J. PARSONS. February 21, 1989.
[Bearing in mind the theme of the Prime Minister’s message and his description of the way the treaty has been viewed, and of how he thought it should be viewed, we do not think the headline gave a wrong impression of his admonition. — Editor!
