PA Auckland Technical legal arguments between the Crown and defence lawyers marked the first day of the trial of Titewhai Harawira and four other former Maori health unit workers charged with assaulting a patient. On Monday a jury of nine women and three
men was asked to leave the Auckland District Court for the day while legal issues concerning the trial were debated in closed court before Judge Denis Pain. Titewhai Harawira, aged 56, of Avondale, her daughter Hinewhare Harawira, aged 35, of Avondale, her son Arthur
Harawira, aged 33, of Otahuhu, Otere Halkyard, aged 26, of Otara and Tui Pere, aged 24, of Otara, have all denied joint and separate charges of injuring Charles Matthews with intent on April 14.
Titewhai Harawira has also denied threatening to kill Mr Matthews on April
