Chatfield, Bracewell dropped
Ewen Chatfield, the coholder of most appearances for New Zealand in one-day cricket, and John Bracewell have not been chosen for the first limited-over international against Pakistan at Lancaster Park on Saturday. In compay with Dipak Patel and Stephen Boock, they were omitted from the 15-man squad assembled for the final test which ended at Auckland yesterday.
To lift the numbers
back to 13 the national selectors have called up the Northern Districts allrounder, Chris Kuggeleijn, and Gary Robertson (Central Districts), a mediumfast bowler and useful lower order bastman. The New Zealand coach, Bob Cunis, yesterday conceded that there was scant chance of Richard Hadlee being fit for the limited-over series. He will not play at Lancaster Park. Chatfield has played in
114 fixtures for New Zealand, and his absence from the Christchurch match will allow John Wright to become the sole record-holder. Mr Cunis tried to soften the blows by saying Chatfield and Bracewell had carried a heavy bowling workload and had been given a rest. The side might be altered after any of the one-day internationals.
The New Zealand team
John Wright (captain), Robert Vance, Andrew Jones, Martin Crowe, Mark Greatbatch, Jeff Crowe, Chris Kuggeleijn, lan Smith, Gary Robertson, Martin Snedden, Willie Watson, Danny Morrison, Richard Hadlee.
Hadlee will return to Christchurch this evening after receiving treatment in Auckland. The New Zealand squad makes the trip tomorrow morning.
