Win today may clinch Melbourne trip for Merrett

Special correspondent Wellington The Awapuni galloper, Merrett, could race in Melbourne next month if he wins the $BOOO Orlando Carrington Classic (1400 m at today’s Napier Park meeting at Hastings. Patrick Campbell, the trainer of Merrett and his owner, Chris Grace, have been eyeing the sAustsol,ooo Newmarket (1200 m at Flemington on March 13 and a flight booking has been made for Merrett. “But he will only go if he wins (today),” Campbell said. “And he would have to win well.” Merrett has been an excellent performer for Campbell. He has only raced nine times and has had four wins and five placings. His worst run was a last-start fourth behind the dead-heaters, Mr Tiz and Festal, in the Elders at Trentham. “He was only half a length from them,” Campbell said. Before Trentham Merrett was second at Hastings and he won The Stewards at

Riccarton previously. Sincee the Elders, Merrett has won a trial at Feilding. He will be ridden today by David Walsh.

Kairau Lad and Bold Silver will be his major opponents. Kairau Lad failed at Matamata, but is expected to improve. Bold Silver has not raced since running unplaced in the Jarden Mile. However, he was second in the Anniversary Handicap, the start before. The Phantom, to be ridden by Noel Harris, will also attract interest today in the $6OOO Budget Progressive (1600 m He may also go to Australia, to Sydney, to race. The Phantom has two wins to show from his four starts. He went to Melbourne for the Victoria Derby last October but did not race at all on the trip.

Two other handy three-year-olds, Triraident and Static Kat, are rivals in the Herberts (2100 m Triraident has not raced since running .eighth in the St Leger. Static Kat beat all but Lou Morton in a three-year-old feature at Hawera last month.
