Anne Of Stratford looks bet of night at Avondale

Special correspondent Auckland The Takanini filly, Anne Of Stratford, gets one of her best opportunities to pick up a winning stake when she contests the Kaipara Tavern Sprint, the main event at the Avondale Jockey Club’s meeting this evening. There are only eight starters, for the $15,000 event, which is for three-year-old fillies, none of which has a record anywhere near as good as Anne Of Stratford. Trained by Stephen and Trevor McKee, Anne Of Stratford had a frustrating run of seconds before she finally cleared maiden ranks when beating Regal Echo, a highly rated three-year-old, in tough company at Ellerslie. Anne Of Stratford then ran second before being stepped up over ground, a move which didn’t suit her. Realising this, the McKees freshened the daughter of Prince Echo and put her back to sprinting at Matamata last month. The result was a stylish victory. Anne Of Stratford has trained on well since then and with the Avondale event

being set weights she looks the bet of the night.

Feminist ran fifth behind Anne Of Stratford at Matamata and that makes her a place chance here, while others to consider are Eskimo Queen and My Court. The promising Matamata stayer, Guard Captain, won with such authority at Avondale last week that he looks set to complete a double on the course in the D.B. Draught 2000, the first leg of the double. Trainer Howie Mathews has held a high opinion of the son of Zivato for some time and is pleased with his progress over the last few weeks. At Avondale last Tuesday night he proved too smart for Cosworth over this distance, recording his fifth win from 24 starts.

Yudan produced a pleasing trial for this event when he ran eighth over 1600 m — a distance short of his best — at Ellerslie last Saturday. He stays well and has gone some bold races against similar company.
