Equity welcomed
Political reporter
The Council of Trade Unions has welcomed Cabinet endorsement of the pay equity principle, but has warned of a “legislative jungle” that will precede its introduction.
The C.T.U. vice-president, Ms Angela Foulkes, described the setting up of an implementation committee for employment equity as a big step forward in the fight for equal pay.
But she warned that the difficulties in providing effective leg-
islation within the industrial relations framework of the Labour Relations Act could not be minimised.
“Recognising comparable worth must mean an upward adjustment of wages for either individual workers, or groups of workers, that have been disadvantaged by past wage-fixing and stereo-typing. “At the end of the day, legislation will be satisfactory if it achieves that aim,” said Ms Foulkes.
