Surf’s up in the Square
A surfing competition will be held in Cathedral Square today but contestants will not need swimming costumes, because they will not get wet. The competition,, for best male and best female surfers, will use a mechanical surfboard last seen in the Australian “Expo.” The competition is part of “Operation Wipeout,” a promotional campaign organised by the Australian Gold Coast Visitors’ Bureau to persuade New Zealanders to holdiay on the Gold Coast. An 18-person team, including 13 Gold Coast business executives and four models, have spent 10 days in New Zealand with the campaign.
The public relations manager for the bureau, Ms Beth Hewitt, said the team was promoting the ever-changing face of the Gold Coast. A 23-minute live show, “A Typical Day in Paradise,” uses dance and music to show the range of activities available on the Gold Coast. “Apart from being incredibly visual, it portrays a myriad of activities you can entertain yourself with while on holiday. It’s professional, humourous, very colourful and it shows the latest fashions,” Ms Hewitt said. “Operation Wipeout” will be in Cathedral Square today between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
