Small rise in Kaikoura Show takings

Gate-takings were up $7 on last year’s at the Kaikoura Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s seventy-seventh annual show in Kaikoura on Saturday.

A total of $2803.67 was taken at the show this year. The show president, Mr Bill Clarkson, said, “I was very pleased with the over-all response and the organisation from the officials and members of the committee throughout the day.” Over all, entries in the 13 sections of the show decreased seven per cent. There were no goat entries. The pony section was up seven per cent, but in the biggest section, that of horses, the number of entries was down on last year’s. Among the new sections and demonstrations were a police dog display by members of the Christchurch handling team and a sheep production class. The production class was open to all breeds and was judged on the day on commercial value, Mr Clarkson said.

“The quality of the sheep was vejy good this year, considering the season the farmers have had,” he said.

The show was officially opened with a biathlon, won by Chris Walker, of Christchurch, in a time of 68min 375. The team section was won by Mike Morrissey and Dave Walford, both of Kaikoura, in 61min 245.

The ribbon for the supreme champion hack went to Mrs Sandra Pilcher, of Blenheim, on Shanragh. The supreme champion pony award was won by Darren Wilkinson, aged 14, of Nelson, on Shazarda. Deirdre Jones, aged 17, of Kaikoura, won the Miss Kaikoura 1989 competition for the second year running. The Miss Intermediate Kaikoura title was won by Leigh Harris, aged 14.
