Copter rescues youth
A Wanganui youth was airlifted off Mt Ngauruhoe on Saturday after falling down the mountain. Aaron Reade, aged 16, was taken to Palmerston North Hospital with injuries to his head and eye. His condition was not available. A helicopter pilot, John Funnell, of Taupo, said Aaron and at least one other person were almost at the top of the mountain at 11 a.m. when Aaron fell. — PA. Fish shop burgled Fish valued at $lO,OOO was stolen from the Vancouver Crescent Fish Shop last week. Thieves opened a padlocked freezer behind the shop where the goods were stored and locked it when they left. The burglary was reported to the police on Friday. Minister denies snub The French Deputy Foreign Minister, Mrs Edwige Avice, took great pains in Paris to explain that the omission of New Zealand from her South Pacific itinerary — which included Australia — was not a diplomatic slight. At a press conference on her return from 10 days in the region, Mrs Avice said the trip was already fully organised by the time the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Marshall, invited her to New Zealand when they met in Paris in January. It was too late then to change the programme which centred on a three-day French aid policy meeting in New Caledonia, she said. Her officials said afterwards that Mrs Avice would probably take up the offer in July during her next planned South Pacific trip. — PA. Florist wins award An Auckland florist, David Bell-Booth, has won the Interflora Designer of the Year Award and the right to represent New Zealand at the World Cup in Japan in August. The competition was held in Invercargill at the week-end. Mr Bell-Booth won three of the six sections contested by six area representatives. Two sections were won by Gail Jones of Hamilton, a previous Designer of the Year title holder, and one by a firsttime competitor, Donna MacPherson.
