Long ride to raise cancer funds
A 1914 B.S.A. motor-cycle will travel from Bluff to Cape Reinga in a fund-raising venture organised by the Akaroa and Bays Lions Club. A member of the club, Mr Jim Shipman, will leave Bluff this morning on the first leg of the journey to raise funds for Camp Quality, the camp for children with cancer. Mr Shipman owns the motorcycle and restored it himself "from a heap of junk,” the club vicepresident, Mr Kevin Templeton said.
Two other members of the club, Messrs Duncan Armstrong and Peter Churchill, would follow Mr Shipman in a back-up van lent by Nissan, Mr Templeton said. The Akaroa and Bays Club has written to Lions clubs throughout New Zealand advising them of the journey and asking them to raise funds. A fund-raising target had not been set but the Akaroa and Bays Club had already raised $2OOO before the journey started, Mr
Templeton said. Mr Shipman will pass through Christchurch and will join other vintage vehicles for a parade between Riccarton Road and Cathedral Square. The fund-raising journey would finish in Cape Reinga on March 16, Mr Templeton said. Many organisations were helping with the journey, including New Zealand Railways, Shell Oil, Telecom, Best Western hotels and Air New Zealand, he said.
