Trialists earn ‘black type’
Prime Rate (1:59.5) and Paleface Walla (1:59.9) gained official “black type” for breeding purposes when they entered the 2:00 list in separate time-trials at the Ashburton meeting on Saturday. Prime Rate looked capable of a much faster mark after she breezed through the opening halfmile in 57.9, . but the Clever Innocence mare tied up noticeably in the
run home. She ran her last half in 61.6 and slowed over her final quarter in 31.6. Paleface Walla, a daughter of Armbro Hurricane, was given a more leisurely run over her opening half by Denis Nyhan and quickened over her last half in 58.8, although she was also labouring a shade near the finish.
